WHY DO TRANSFORMERS PRODUCE THAT FAMILIAR "HUM"?
WHY DO TRANSFORMERS PRODUCE THAT FAMILIAR "HUM"?
The characteristic hum of a transformer is more than just a sound—it reflects how the equipment operates.
Many people believe the noise comes from the electric current. In fact, electric current itself does not generate sound. The primary source is the transformer core.
As alternating magnetic flux passes through the laminated steel core, the steel expands and contracts by an extremely small amount. This phenomenon, known as magnetostriction, creates continuous vibrations that produce the familiar humming sound.
This is why a transformer can make noise even under no-load conditions. As long as the transformer is energized, magnetic flux exists in the core and the vibration begins.
When the transformer is under load, electromagnetic forces acting on the windings also contribute to vibration. Heavy loading, fluctuating demand, or harmonic distortion can further increase the noise level. Cooling fans and oil pumps may also add mechanical and aerodynamic noise.
A stable, consistent hum is generally a normal operating characteristic. However, a sudden increase in noise, irregular vibration, rattling, or crackling may indicate that the transformer should be inspected.
Common causes of abnormal transformer noise include:
+ Overvoltage
+ High harmonic distortion
+ Loose core or structural components
+ Cooling fan or oil pump issues
+ Vibration amplified by the foundation or surrounding structure
For projects such as hospitals, schools, office buildings, hotels, and residential developments, transformer noise should be considered during the design stage—not after installation.
At THIBIDI, noise control is incorporated throughout the engineering process, from core design and magnetic flux optimization to structural design and factory testing.
Our goal is not to eliminate transformer sound completely, but to control vibration and noise within appropriate limits while ensuring reliable performance.
A steady hum is often normal. A sound that changes unexpectedly is always worth investigating.
